Get inspired by Dungeons & Dragons and bring characters and creatures to life through illustration!

Over seven weeks, you’ll design original characters, costumes, and magical artefacts. We’ll explore how visual storytelling shapes fantasy worlds. From sketch to finished artwork, this course balances practical drawing skills with creative invention, perfect for artists who love creating characters, narrative, design, and adventure.

Materials Required:

  • Pencil

  • Paper

  • Hard + kneadable erasers

You are welcome to bring in digital drawing tablets and any other materials you want to create with ☺️

Week 1 – Drawing from Archetypes:
Explore classic D&D character classes and races; quick studies of body types, poses, and silhouettes.

Week 2 – Faces & Expression:
Develop facial features and expressions that tell a story; sketching emotion and personality.

Week 3 – Costumes & Armour:
Learn how to build believable fantasy costumes. Referencing history, materials, and character function.

Week 4 – Villains & Monsters:

Flip perspective and explore creature design and antagonists.

Week 5 – Magical Items & Artefacts:
Design iconic objects like weapons, potions, spellbooks, and relics, focusing on shape language and symbolic design.

Week 6 – Composition & Narrative:
Combine your elements into scenes or character portraits; explore lighting, staging, and atmosphere.

Week 7 – Final Illustration:
Bring a finished piece to life — your hero (or villain) with their artefacts and world — and group review.
